DALLAS – The Tampa Bay Lightning need every penny of salary cap space possible throughout the season.
With an emerging rookie making his case for a permanent spot on the roster and another on the verge of returning from injury, Tampa Bay needed to clear some salary cap space to make it all fit and remain compliant while still allowing meritocracy to remain the overriding factor in the on-ice deciions.
The Lightning did just that, moving a former second round pick off the roster to make room for the player that outplayed him for a roster spot.
