TAMPA – The Tampa Bay Lightning figure their top selection in the 2021 draft develops into a towering defenseman.
With no selection until the final pick of the third round, the 96th overall, Tampa Bay called on 6-foot-6 right-shot defenseman Roman Schmidt from the US National Development Program. Schmidt is headed to Kitchener of the Ontario Hockey League for the 2021-22 season after two seasons in the USNDP.
It will continue a family tradition for Schmidt, who has been on skates from the time he was able to walk.
