TAMPA – Three years ago Carter Verhaeghe sat at a hockey crossroads, of sorts.
A former third-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs - his hometown team - in 2013, Verhaeghe had just been traded to his third organization in two years.
He was dealt by Toronto during training camp in 2015, spent two seasons with the New York Islanders on the elevator between the East Coast Hockey League and the American Hockey League, appearing in 36 combined games with the Missouri Maverick of the ECHL and 75 with Bridgeport of the AHL without exactly enjoying a breakout.
